The Color Bar & Aesthetics Owensboro, Ky - Branding Session with Kensley Goddard

I had the wonderful opportunity to do a branding session for Kensley Goddard recently and we literally had the best time. This was my first branding shoot in my new studio, and you will see from the gallery I have the dreamiest natural light to work with.

When doing a branding session, it is so important to ask your client questions and to really get to know them, which comes natural for me. If you have ever had a session with me, you totally understand what I am talking about. By the time you leave, I generally know your entire life story. That is, however, what it is ALL ABOUT. All sessions, including branding, should represent you. They should capture your personality and people should feel like just through the image they know a little about you. I am confident, this is one of the reasons my business has come as far as it has. I am really invested in telling my client's stories. Your images, your story, will be your legacy and all people will have to remember you one day. But that topic is a whole new blog for another day.

Back to Kensley's session. For those of you who do not know Kensley, she is the owner of The Color Bar located at 353 Washington Ave, Owensboro, Ky 42301. As we were styling and posing, laughing and talking I learned so much about her personally and professionally and felt like her knowledge of hair should be heard. She told me things about hair that I had never heard, granted I am not professional hair stylist. So, I put together a fun interview for Kensley and wanted to share with all of you.

What is the name of your business?

The Color Bar & Aesthetics

How long have you worked as a stylist?

I have had my hands in hair since 2011 when I started cosmetology school however, I’ve been a licensed stylist since 2013!

If you were not a stylist, what would you be?

In a perfect world, I would love to be a stay-at-home mom/wife, where I could be self-sufficient from home on a good size farm and live an off the grid kind of life. Home schooling our current and future babies, gardening, and having an at home ceramic studio!

What dreams/ goals do you have for your business?

I have so many! One of my goals for 2022 is to find someone ready to learn and to mentor! To give an apprenticeship to, like the one I received in Nashville. To be able to help licensed stylist become their best selves behind the chair and help pour my knowledge into.

What makes you different from other local stylist or salons?

My out of city training and premium education! Also, I think the fact that I have cosmetology and barber training plays a huge factor in what makes me very different! It’s very rare to find a cosmetologist trained to be able to know how to properly cater to both male and female however when you understand the fundamentals of haircutting, it becomes easy to break the different types of haircuts down and know the “why” behind how I’m cutting the hair.

What is the funniest thing you have done or witnessed while working?

There’s been lots of laughs over the years but the one that stands out the most is something that happened not long ago! I had a client in my chair who was scheduled for a haircut and was in a bit of a time crunch, so I knew I needed to get right to business. While in the middle of cutting her hair, one of the girls who works at my salon lets out the loudest squill and comes running out of our break room as fast as she can yelling “A BIRD!!!!” At first, I thought that she was playing a joke on me, but before I could react, a bird comes flying out of the break room and literally lands on a station where another client was sitting. Knowing that I run this place I’m like “oh my gosh I have to handle this, and there’s no way I’m going to catch this bird with my bare hands!” before I knew it I had about five screaming women including myself running all around my salon freaking out with no one brave enough to catch this bird flying all over the place. (Mind you, one of my girls dad is a veterinarian and she’s been raised around every type of living creature there is and has no fear... of course she had already left for the day. Ugh!!) So, after an attempt to corner the bird, (not touching it) I quickly remembered that my client had no spare time to waste and I had to get back to cutting her hair! My brave receptionist Carsyn came in super clutch and grabbed a haircutting cape and finds the courage to catch the bird and safely gets it back outside literally saving the day. She will always be a hero for this and yes, we threw the cape away and properly disinfected. It was just one of those situations I so badly wished that my cameras would have caught but of course we were in the one spot in the salon that didn’t have a camera facing in that direction. It was seriously bananas and I laugh about it all the time still. LIKE WHAT IN THE WORLD IS MY LIFE!!! Oh, and I somehow managed to get my client out the door right on time and didn’t charge her for the free show. She was VERY entertained.

What is your favorite type of style or color to do?

I specialize in precision haircutting and coloring. It’s hard to say what my favorite is. When it comes to haircutting, I love bobs because I have studied them the most out of every haircut out there. I also find a lot of passion in longer haircuts creating balanced layers which 9/10 every new client that sits in my chair has unbalanced layers. Being able to give my clients an experience and being able to perform quality seems to be something they’re not used to receiving so I’m just happy to help with the ones who need me and have high expectations/ value the artist that I am.

Where did you receive your education?

I graduated from the salon professional academy in Lexington Ky and then moved to Nashville where I did an 8-month apprenticeship with my mentor (Jesse Linares), took a class at The Redken Exchange in New York, and continue to extend my education yearly!

How can someone get in touch to book a hair appointment?

Our number is (270) 926-9042.They can call and schedule an appointment with our receptionist.
