Why are professional family portraits important?

It is becoming more and more common for families to invest in professional portrait sessions and capturing their families most precious memories. As parents we cannot remember every memory but through pictures, we are able to relive that time in our lives. There are several more important reasons to have professional images taken that I guarantee most people haven’t thought about.

We are learning more and more about our children’s self-esteem especially in the social media world that we live in. Children need to feel and know their family is their safe place and that is where they belong. Psychologist David Krauss says, “I think it is really important to show a family as a family unit. It is helpful for children to see themselves as a valued and important part of the family.” When children see their portraits displayed, they feel valued and important. “My bias is very simple. I think they (family photographs) should be on the wall,” says Krauss. “I am very conservative about self-esteem, and I think placing a photo someplace in the home where the child can see it every day without having to turn on a device or click around on a computer to find it really hits home for that child. This is a sense of reassurance and comfort. They have a certainty about them and a protecting quality that nurtures a child. It lets them know where they are in the pecking order and that they are loved and cared for, says Krauss.

Life is busy and chaotic and time flies. A family photo session is the perfect escape for a few hours to just enjoy your family and photographers get you in close to one another often prompting you to hug on one another and digging deep to get those bonding moments. Not only is this the perfect time you and your family need every once and a while these photos will be keepsakes of good times and happy memories. So often we take quick photos on our phones after our children get dressed up for an event and it just feels necessary to get a quick photo before their off, an entire session is so much more than just an image it is a whole experience that you will not forget.

The first year of your new baby's life will fly by. Also, it is very hectic. Pictures on your phone are a must but they don't compare to a session with a professional photographer. We have prompts and patience to get the right shot of your adorable baby and their adorable features. You will absolutely regret not getting images of their milestones: newborn, six months and one year. Furthermore, get in the session with them. You are not doing anyone a favor by not squeezing in a few images of you holding your baby. It will be a timeless keepsake for both you and them to treasure.

As a photographer, in all of my almost ten years of business, I have never had anyone say, " I regret having too many pictures." On the other hand, sadly, after a loved one has passed or a child has grown, I have many clients say, "I wish I had more pictures." After my dad passed, the first thing I did was collect as many photos as I could to remember his entire life here on Earth, they are treasures and pictures are our legacy.
